Scallops

Wedge Wire and Perporated Scallops are essential radial flow distribution components installed along the inner wall of a reactor vessel. They form an annular space between the vessel wall and the catalyst bed, ensuring uniform process fluid distribution, efficient catalyst utilization, and reliable long term operation.

Function & Design

In a radial flow reactor, process fluid enters the annular space created by the scallops and is evenly distributed through the catalyst bed toward the center pipe. Our scallops are engineered to deliver:

  • Uniform Flow Distribution: Precisely positioned slots or wedge wire screens across the scallop surface promote even radial flow, preventing channeling, hot spots, and uneven catalyst usage.
  • Low Pressure Drop: Optimized open area reduces resistance and energy consumption while maintaining high throughput.
  • Catalyst Retention: The screen or perforation design effectively contains catalyst particles while allowing process fluid to pass freely.
  • Thermal Flexibility: The segmented scallop arrangement accommodates thermal expansion and contraction, reducing mechanical stress on the vessel and internals.

Materials & Manufacturing

We manufacture scallops from high performance alloys such as Stainless Steel (SS304, SS316, SS321), Incoloy, Hastelloy, and other corrosion resistant materials. Each scallop is fabricated using CNC punching, precision welding, and strict quality control to ensure dimensional accuracy and long service life.

Applications

Scallops are widely used in radial flow reactors across downstream refining and petrochemical processes, including:

  • Catalytic Reforming Units (CCR)
  • Isomerization Units
  • Hydrotreating Units
  • Dehydrogenation Units
